Integration of EtherNet/IP and DH+

EtherNet/IP and Data Highway Plus (DH+) are two distinct industrial communication protocols used in industrial automation for data exchange between devices such as PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems. Integrating these two protocols allows legacy DH+ devices to communicate with modern Ethernet/IP networks, providing a seamless connection between different generations of equipment.

Integration of EtherNet/IP and DH+

1. Overview

  • EtherNet/IP: An industrial Ethernet protocol that uses standard Ethernet and TCP/IP for communication. It is widely used for real-time control and information exchange in industrial environments.
  • Data Highway Plus (DH+): An older, proprietary communication protocol developed by Allen-Bradley (Rockwell Automation) for communication between PLCs and other devices.

  • To facilitate communication between legacy DH+ devices and modern Ethernet/IP devices.
  • To enable centralized monitoring and control of all devices within a single network infrastructure.

Setting Up ANC-100e for EtherNet/IP to DH+ Integration

1. Hardware Setup

  • Connect the ANC-100e to DH+ Network: Connect the DH+ port of the ANC-100e to the DH+ network using the appropriate cable.
  • Connect the ANC-100e to Ethernet Network: Connect the Ethernet port of the ANC-100e to your Ethernet switch or router using an Ethernet cable.
  • Power Up the ANC-100e: Connect the power supply to the ANC-100e and ensure the device powers up correctly.

2. Configuration of ANC-100e

  • Access Web Interface: Open a web browser on a PC connected to the same Ethernet network as the ANC-100e. Enter the default IP address of the ANC-100e (refer to the user manual for the default IP address).
  • Login: Use the default login credentials (username and password) to access the web interface.
  • Configure Network Settings: Set the IP address, subnet mask, and gateway to match your network configuration.
  • Configure DH+ Settings: Set the DH+ station number and other parameters as required for your DH+ network.
  • Save Configuration: Save the configuration and restart the ANC-100e if necessary.

Setting Up Wonderware ABCIP DAServer

To facilitate communication between the EtherNet/IP network and DH+ devices, you can use Wonderware’s ABCIP DAServer.

1. Install ABCIP DAServer

  • Ensure that the Wonderware ABCIP DAServer is installed on your PC.

2. Configure DAServer

  • Launch DAServer Manager: Open the DAServer Manager from the Wonderware System Platform.
  • Add New DAServer: Right-click on “DAServer Manager” and select “Add DAServer”. Choose the ABCIP DAServer and follow the prompts.
  • Configure DAServer Settings: Enter necessary details such as server name and description.
  • Add Device Group: Right-click on the new DAServer instance and select “Add Group”. Name the group and configure the scan rate.
  • Add ANC-100e Device: Right-click on the device group and select “Add Device”. Enter the device name and configure the settings:
    • Set the protocol to EtherNet/IP.
    • Enter the IP address of the ANC-100e.
    • Configure other necessary settings such as the slot number and path.

Testing and Deployment

  1. Verify Device Status: In DAServer Manager, check the status of the ANC-100e device. It should show as connected if the configuration is correct.
  2. Monitor Data: Use Wonderware’s System Platform tools to monitor the data being communicated between the Ethernet/IP network and the DH+ devices.
  3. Troubleshooting: If the device does not connect, verify the IP settings, network connections, and DH+ configurations. Check the logs in DAServer Manager for any error messages that can help in troubleshooting.


Integrating EtherNet/IP and DH+ networks using a gateway like the ANC-100e and Wonderware ABCIP DAServer allows for seamless communication between legacy and modern devices. This integration protects investments in existing equipment while enabling the benefits of modern Ethernet-based control systems, enhancing overall operational efficiency and flexibility in industrial environments.
